Welcome to our first Kitchen Makeover story for 2020! This stunning transformation proves that a small kitchen footprint doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on style, functionality or storage- you can have it all! Step inside this modern Hamptons-inspired kitchen we created in Sydney suburb Lane Cove, and see how you can bring your dream kitchen to life, even when space is limited.

Who Lives Here? Young corporate couple Olivia and Henry.

The Problem: The original timber kitchen was dated in style but more importantly it lacked functionality- storage was scarce and there was no pantry, dishwasher or bin – all ‘must-haves’ in modern Australian kitchen design.

Before: The original kitchen lacked storage and had no pantry or bin- essentials in a modern kitchen.

The Brief: Olivia and Henry wanted a kitchen that maximised storage and functionality while still keeping the room open and light to give a sense of space. Style-wise, they wanted to create a modern Hamptons-inspired look to bring the space in line with the style of the rest of the home.

The Solution:

Cabinetry.

The Shaker-style Somersby doors in Classic White Matt were the perfect choice in creating the Hamptons look the homeowners wanted to evoke. The simple yet elegant Shaker profile paired with the white tone keeps the room bright and airy and creates a wonderful base to then layer with other finishes throughout the kitchen. “We love the look of the cabinetry as it’s perfect for the look we wanted,” says Olivia. “Plus I love that our new dishwasher and bin have been integrated behind it!”

Broadline Glass Display Cabinets.

One of the first things that you notice as you step into the kitchen is the stunning Broadline Glass Display Cabinets on the left, a nod to the homes’ history. “This is one of my favourite features of the kitchen,” says Olivia. “Not only is it a gorgeous feature, it really helps marry the kitchen with the art-deco style of the rest of the apartment and the building its a part of”.

Lighting has been thoughtfully used to further accentuate the beauty of these cabinets. Incorporating LED downlights within the cabinets allows the owners to showcase glassware and other styling decor stored in the space. LED downlights have also been added under the cabinets, ensuring that the prep areas are well lit below.

Benchtop.

Marble-look benchtops are the perfect fit for the ever-popular Hamptons-inspired kitchen style. Empira White tops from Caesarstone, with its pure white base and almost black veins, work perfectly with the other features of the room. The white base matches with the cabinetry and splashback, while the black veins complement the darker accessories and appliances.

Beyond the colour of the countertop, other aspects have been considered to complement the style and look Olivia and Henry wanted to create in their new Kinsman Kitchen. The slim 20mm thickness and the Aris edging, a classic angled edge, balances the traditional and the modern.

Storage.

One of the main things that the homeowners wanted to address for the design of their new kitchen was the lack of storage. To address this, each zone of the kitchen has been reviewed and smart storage solutions incorporated. The upper cabinets provide space for glassware and small dinnerware, while the lower panels offer deep internal drawers which are ideal for storing larger dinnerware as well as pots and pans, chopping boards and small appliances. A large pantry sits next to the fridge, a bin is concealed behind cabinetry next to the sink and cutlery trays make organisation of both cutlery and utensils a breeze.

Details.

It’s the small details that make this kitchen as much as success as the more dominant features and finishes. We love the splashback featuring white agrestic subway tiles with an anthracite grout- the subway is the perfect tile choice for the classic look while the dark grout adds contrast. A mixture of black and stainless steel appliances and accessories adds a modern flavour. Finally, Matt Black Painted Oblong Bar handles are the perfect finishing touch, the clean lines complementing those of the Shaker-style cabinetry.
