Ensure the working areas in your kitchen are well lit with stylish and well-considered lighting. We believe that a smart and considered lighting plan, which includes a statement pendant light over the island bench, is often an overlooked design decision that can actually transform your kitchen – both in terms of style and functionality.
Not sure where to look for inspiration to find your perfect lighting? Look no further than the kitchens we helped create on The Block, which feature stylish lighting from Beacon Lighting. Below we take a look at our favourite pieces from the past two seasons.
Harry and Tash, House 1 (The Block 2020)
Downlights are a simple yet effective way of lighting your kitchen, particularly when placed strategically over working areas within the room. Harry and Tash upped the luxe factor by including four architectural MFL By Masson Gypsum Flat Surface Mounted White Downlights over their 4.3m long island bench. The sleek, yet sculptural lines of these lights paired with recessed with ceiling downlights keep their kitchen looking fresh and modern. Kinsman’s LED Flexy lighting below the range hood and kickboards further enhance the look.
Sarah and George, House 2 (The Block 2020)
Sarah and George presented a kitchen that celebrates a contemporary take on a traditional shaker-style kitchen. The look is in part achieved through a monochromatic colour scheme, and the minimalist and architectural design of the Masson For Lighting Roman LED Pendant in Black is a perfect choice for this space. Sitting pretty above the island bench, this linear pendant light custom designed and manufactured in Australia, adds to the beautiful lines seen throughout the kitchen, pairing perfectly with the window splashback and Kinsman’s Somersby Black Matt Frames with Broadline Glass. Get a similar look with the MFL By Masson Fleming Dimmable Pendant in Black. Throughout the main kitchen and butler’s pantry, thoughtful lighting is achieved with downlights and Flexy LED lighting.
Daniel & Jade, House 3 (The Block 2020)
Elegant and welcoming, Daniel and Jade’s winning kitchen features a considered lighting plan throughout. The Lexicon Suspension Pendants in Black paired with Lexicon Tall Shades in Clear, which have been positioned above the island’s curved seating area, take centre stage. We love how they opted to cluster the Lexicon pendants together at different heights, creating an eye-catching feature. The couple has mixed and matched their pendants with Dimmable Surface Mounted Downlights in Black, creating a unique look, ensuring that each ‘work zone’ within the kitchen and pantry has been well lit.
Luke & Jasmin, House 4 (The Block 2020)
Light and bright, Luke and Jasmin’s kitchen features an appealing colour scheme of bright whites, timber and gold. With Kinsman’s Oxley Supa Ultra White Matt dominating the space, the elegant Rivit LED Dimmable Pendant in Brass makes a statement over the island. Complementing the other gold features within the main kitchen, including the tap and our integrated Marq handles in UltraGold, the pendant nods to the home’s era while remaining modern. By pairing it with downlights in the rest of the room, Luke and Jasmin’s lighting plan is a balance between decorative and functional lighting, ensuring that their kitchen not only looks great but works well too.
Tess & Luke, House 4 (The Block 2019)
Winners of The Block 2019, young guns Tess and Luke created an industrial entertainers kitchen that celebrates function and modern-day good looks. One of the most prominent design features within the space is their generous, almost square island bench. By and large, their lighting is understated throughout the area, except for the architecturally designed MFL By Masson Titan Adjustable Black Downlights and the stunning Panorama 8 Light Round LED Pendant in Black, which perfectly illuminates the island and provides a focal point within the room.
Jesse & Mel, House 5 (The Block 2019)
Jesse and Mel’s kitchen featured their signature dark, opulent and rich colour palette, their use of various tones and textures injecting interest and personality into the room. The pair have used lighting to highlight the kitchen’s various features, from simple downlights to LED strip lighting within the island to showcase the beauty of the marble look of Caesarstone’s® Statuario Maximus. However, our favourite lighting feature has to be the Avenue LED Dimmable Bar Pendant in Brass above the island, as it adds the perfect amount of elegance with its beautiful lines and brass finish.
