The Block 2021: Luxurious Laundries You’ll Love

The most notorious week on The Block, affectionately known as “Hell Week”, pushed all the Blockheads to produce a series of laundries, hallways and powder rooms that are stylish and functional. In the past, laundries were often forgotten spaces, overlooked for their practical nature. However, the five laundries presented this week prove that a Kinsman Laundry combines beautiful finishes, storage and functionality, producing a place that will make laundry day a joy!

Read on to learn more about each laundry and what the judges thought of them.

House 1: Ronnie & Georgia, Score: 29, Place: 2nd

Like the rest of their home, House 1’s laundry balances style with functionality. The neutral palette of grey, timber, marble and brass evokes a luxurious coastal vibe and matches the scheme used within the kitchen. “Our laundry is really an extension of our kitchen, so the colour palette was the same, explains Georgia.

“Oh, what a beautifully finished space, exclaimed Shaynna Blaze as the three judges passed through the butler’s pantry through to the laundry. It’s just sleek: simple and sleek!” They all appreciated the smart layout and the ample storage that the room provides.

This focus on storage is evident throughout the design. Subtle shaker-style Camden doors in Oyster Grey Matt feature throughout and paired with Kinsman’s new Otto Brass handles, creating a plethora of space to store essentials. Prime Oak decorative open shelving provides the perfect place for styling decor, and the benchtop and splashback in Caesarstone® Statuario Maximus add to the luxe feel.

A Bosch washing machine and clothes dryer have been included, essential for any modern family home. Ronnie and Georgia have increased the cabinetry on offer under the sink and tap by opting to stack these appliances. Thoughtful extras such as a Laundry Basket and Broom cupboard with Tandem Side ensure that this is a laundry room that works hard while looking great!

“Two pull out laundry baskets. How good is that,” smiled Shaynna. “For me, laundry baskets are as important to laundries as bins are to kitchens,” added Darren Palmer. They loved the broom cupboard, noting that it is often a forgotten inclusion in a modern laundry despite being the perfect place to store items such as brooms, mops and ironing boards. “I’m at that age now where I get really excited by things like that, laughed Neale Whitaker. All in all, this is a laundry that ticks all the boxes and is a valuable addition to House 1.

House 2: Mitch & Mark, Score: 26.6, Place: 3rd

Showcasing style, texture and organic tones, Mitch and Mark have created a laundry that stands out from the crowd. The crisp white and oak colour palette was chosen to match the pantry, which now includes a tall, full-sized pantry cupboard after the boys took on the judges feedback during Kitchen Week. Walking through the pantry to access the laundry, the judges were delighted to see the new addition to the room. “We’ve got a cupboard! A pantry! cried Shaynna. I like it!”

Moving into the laundry, deeply fluted Sorrento cabinetry in Classic White Matt adds texture, while Montauk Prime Oak Woodmatt joinery injects warmth and depth to the space. A mixture of Barrington Eclipse Plain Matt Brass and Touch Catch handles have been used throughout, with the brass handles adding a hint of glamour and the Touch Catch featuring on upper cupboards to maintain a sleek look.

All judges loved the symmetry and connection between the pantry and laundry. “When you’ve got the door open, explains Shaynna. It opens the space up beautifully.” They loved the generous storage, the area to store coats at the door and the gorgeous texture of the fluted Sorrento joinery. They did note that the boys should swap the washer and dryer so that the doors would open like a french door allowing clothes to be easily moved from one to the other. Overall, however, they loved the room and its natural yet glamour colour scheme.

Ample storage was paramount in the layout of House 2’s laundry. The design includes a broom cupboard with extra organisation available thanks to the inclusion of Hafele Tandem Sides. Next to this sits Bosch appliances and High Side Drawers underneath and cupboards above. A sink and tap, open shelving in Chadstone Prime Oak Woodmatt, and folding space thanks to Caesarstone® Aterra Blanca countertops complete the room to perfection.

House 3: Tanya & Vito, Score: 25, Place: 4th

Tanya and Vito’s galley-style laundry celebrates curves and colours and echoes the aesthetic of their standout butler’s pantry. The playful colour scheme features a combination of door profiles from the Kinsman range and includes two new profiles: Ballina Rose’ All Day and Archie Classic White Matt with Vertical Broadline Glass. Chadstone Prime Oak Woodmatt doors have been used to great effect as a bank of linen cupboards.

Stepping into the bright and cheerful space, Shaynna exclaimed, “How cute is this?” The judges loved that it worked in nicely with the kitchen palette and included ample storage throughout. Shaynna admired the bank of timber-look cupboards facing the main laundry but questioned the drawer units inside as they limited access within the room, suggesting that open shelving would have been a better solution. Despite these minor misgivings, the judges were very impressed with what Tanya and Vito presented.

Ballina Essendon White Satin joinery conceals a broom cupboard to the left of the stacked Bosch washing machine and clothes dryer. More pops of white have been added with a countertop in Caesarstone® White Shimmer. Close attention has also been paid to lighting, with Warm Premium LED Strip lighting and Warm LED Downlights used within the design, meaning the laundry can be used day and night.

Beyond its stunning looks, Tanya and Vito have ensured plenty of storage and clever storage accessories shine within their design- tailoring it to a busy household. House 4: Luke & Josh, Score: 18.5, Place: 5th

Twin Josh and Luke certainly felt the wrath of Hell Week. Not only did they have three rooms to present, but they also reworked their Living & Dining room and dealt with ongoing concerns regarding their pool. Unfortunately, this led them to fall behind the rest of the teams, leaving many spaces incomplete. Thankfully their laundry, the largest on The Block this season, provided a much-needed highlight to the judges’ walkthrough.

The boys have created a dark and bold laundry that perfectly complements their kitchen and much of the joinery used throughout House 4. Its galley-shaped layout has allowed the twins to design a room that will serve a large family household.

“Wow, said Shaynna as she entered the laundry. This is a breath of fresh air!” All three judges loved the palette, the layout and the quality of impactful finishes, saying that it was one of the best-planned spaces Josh and Luke have delivered. “This is a good laundry, stated Darren. The whole laundry makes sense and has been planned out well. It’s functional, has heaps of utility and lots of storage.”

The laundry features cabinetry in Kinsman’s new Ballina French Dark Grain Puregrain, evoking the same monochromatic palette as their kitchen. To keep the look streamlined and modern, a mixture of Touch Catch and Volpato handles feature throughout. Matte black features add to the contemporary architectural style as seen through the 2020 Alumin Frame Shelving with Broadline Glass and a Black Hanging Rail.

The placement of Bosch appliances under the bench in Caesarstone® Statuario Maximus produces a generous folding station. The marble-look quartz surface has also been used for the splashbacks, creating a beautiful contrast to the dark joinery. A plethora of storage space and clever organisational accessories such as Laundry Wire Baskets ensure that the laundry is right at home within House 4.

House 5: Kirsty & Jesse, Score: 29.5, Place: 1st

After a heartbreaking week that saw Kirsty say goodbye to her beloved grandmother, she and Jesse managed to deliver three beautiful and awe-inspiring rooms, including their laundry room. Stepping into the laundry, the smiles on the judges faces said it all. This is beautiful, said Neale. “Ahh, the size of this bench, added Shaynna. They instantly recognised the finishes as those in their kitchen, which they described as stunning. “It’s 100% focussed on functionality without any sacrifice of aesthetics,” said Neale.

The room features a beautiful mixture of Ink Blue and Brass-inspired joinery with cabinets in Shaker-look Montauk Ink with Chadstone Prime Oak Woodmatt interiors. Brass-look handles have been used throughout to add to the glamourous palette and include two new additions to the Kinsman collection: Barrington Knobs with Backing Plate in Matt Brass and Barrington Cup Pulls in Matt Brass. Marble-look Caesarstone® Aterra Blanca benchtops and a white splashback featuring textured tiles bring the look together.

The eye is immediately drawn to the showpiece Montauk Ink Matt cabinets with Patina Mesh inserts. An incredible new addition to the Kinsman Range, the Brass Patina is made from uncoated genuine brass mesh, which will age and oxidise over time, producing an extraordinary design component within the room.

Functionality has not been forgotten within the room, with inclusions such as a Laundry Wire Basket, Internal Drawers, and Tandem Side storage within the broom cupboard, providing plenty of organisational opportunities. Stacked Bosch appliances allow for more storage under the sink and tap while producing a generous folding station above.

“This couple astounds me, said Neale. I can’t think of the last time there was a couple on The Block who were on such a trajectory. It’s every week they go up, up, up, up!”
